What size Downrigger weight should I use?

When using a Downrigger to help control where your Line is sitting, the amount of weight you attach to it can be determined by the troll speed and lure and bait resistance.

The rule of thumb is the bigger the better, though it depends on what you are trying to catch

  • If you troll a small trout lure slowly, you can use a small weight
  • If you troll a large salt water deep diver at a higher speed, you need a larger weight.

What you''re trying to do is overcome the Drag caused by the lure or the Boat speed, as the lighter the weight, the further the bomb is pushed back and ideally you want the bomb going strait down.

Downrigger weights, also known as bombs, come in 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12lbs options.
