Meteorology is the study of weather conditions through observing the state of the atmosphere, air pressure, temperature, humidity and wind.

Common weather instruments used in meteorology include:

  • Barometers measure atmospheric pressure or the pressure exerted by the weight of the Earth's atmosphere above a particular location.

  • Thermometers measure temperature of the air, or the kinetic energy of the molecules within air.

  • Hygrometers measure relative humidity or moisture content in the atmosphere. To calculate humidity, readings of temperature and air pressure are taken into account.

  • Anemometers measure the wind speed and the direction the wind is blowing from at the site where it is mounted.
