Chandlery
Similar Terms: chandler, ship-chandler
A shop selling supplies and equipment for ships and boats, run by a chandler - a person who works in the chandlery business.
Â
Originally, back in medieval times, the chandlery was the room or office of the house where wax, candles and soaps were made - and the chandler was the >Head candlemaker. (You can see, then, where the word 'chandelier' comes from - as originally these consisted of candles rather than electric lights).
Â
By the 18th century, though, many chandlers had expanded their Range to include nautical goods - stocking items such as Rope, tar, hooks, >Galley supplies, etc - and so we have the chandleries that we know today.
