The term pixels can be used in the abstract, or as a unit of measure. In digital imagery (as in Fishfinder and GPS chartplotter LCD displays), a pixel is the smallest addressable screen element; it is the smallest element of a picture that can be represented or controlled.

Pixels are the small square picture elements that together compose the image on an LCD.

Measured as a vertical by horizontal number (i.e. 320V x 240H), the pixel specification typically indicates the displays Resolution quality. In Fish finders the Vertical Pixel Resolution is often more important than the total Resolution (vertical multiplied by horizontal). Pixels used as a measure of Resolution, can be quantified in numerous ways such as: 2400 pixels per inch (ppi) or dots per inch (dpi), 640 pixels per Line, or spaced 10 pixels apart.
