The McMurdo Smartfind S10 AIS Beacon, is a manually activated personal safety device, which is designed to aid speedy recovery of personnel or crew, who run into difficulty at sea.

Through the Automatic Identification System (AIS) and 50 Channel GPS technology, the Smartfind S10 AIS Beacon transmits target survivor information such as structured alert messages, GPS position and a serialised identity number, to enable the easy location of anyone at sea.

The GPS Receiver transmits updated position information every minute, allowing for the quick recovery of a person in danger, once they have activated the device. To activate, you must first remove the safety pin, twist the bottom part in a clockwise direction and then push it in, ensuring that nothing is obscuring the GPS zone. If the device flashes three times then GPS signal has been sent out. If it flashes five times, then there could be a problem such as it being submerged in water, or not connected with your body, which acts as part of the Antenna.

The target information from the S10 Beacon, can then be viewed from standard ships AIS equipment such as Class A and Class B Transponders, as well as a broad selection of receive only AIS units. This is alongside any AIS equipped vessels and land based VTS stations within a four Nautical Mile radius, because the best boat to recover someone lost at see is the Boat they fell from. The information becomes visible when the chartplotter/ECDIS cursor is positioned over the alert icon, on the screen of the device.

The buoyant Smartfind S10 is waterproof up to 60 meters, will transmit continuously for a minimum of 24 hours, contains a flashing LED indicator light to attract attention after dark and has a battery storage life of up to 5 years.

After rescue, the beacon is able to be turned off and tested with the inbuilt test function, to assess whether the battery needs replacing or not. This test should be performed on a monthly basis regardless of whether the beacon has been used or not.

The S10 Beacon comes with a lanyard and belt or arm pouch, to ensure that you have it with you at all times. The small and light device, coming in at only 150g, is unobtrusive and does not get in the Way of your water based activities.
