Sonar
Sonar is an acronym for Sound Navigation and Ranging. It refers to the transmission of sound waves through water and measuring the time it takes the echo to bounce back to identify underwater objects.
The technology is used in depth finders, sounders and fishfinders. The term Sonar is more commonly seen in US descriptions of marine electronic devices that utilise this technology.
