Halo20 and Halo20+ Radar - What’s the difference?

Looking for the ideal >Radar to complete your set-up? Halo20 came onto the market in December 2019, offering high level performance at an affordable price.

Ideal for smaller boats, Halo20 is small and compact at 20” diameter, and covers a Range of up to 24nm. Halo20+ (same diameter) features more bells and whistles, covering up to 36nm.

So what are some of the other differences you can expect?

VelocityTrack

The main difference Halo20+ has over Halo20 is that it features VelocityTrack Doppler technology, which helps improve your situational awareness by colour coding information for a real time view of whether something is moving towards you or away with no limits on screen, so no need to manually select targets. This is particularly useful in tracking weather cells and checking to see how quickly they maybe approaching and if you are in their Way.

Dual Range capability

Halo20+ also boasts Dual Range support and a super fast Antenna rotation speed of up to 60rpm. The effect of high rotation speed is almost the same as continuous 360 view, as opposed to the sweeped view of a traditional >Radar. 360 view provides extra safety and much better collision avoidance.

Pulse Compression technology

Both Halo20 and Halo20+ use pulse compression technology, which set them apart from traditional >Broadband (FMCW) radars like 3G and 4G >Radar.

Pulse compression allows a >Radar to use a long pulse to achieve a large radiated energy, but with the Range Resolution of a short pulse of wide bandwidth.

Meanwhile, traditional >Broadband (FMCW) >Radar sends a signal where the Frequency is continually changed in a repeatable pattern that's modulated over time.

Beamwidth & Target Separation

Halo20 and 20+ have a slightly wider beamwidth (4.9° H x 25° V) than Halo24 (3.9° H x 22° V) – and even wider again than 3G or 4G >Radar (2.6° H x 25° V).

Radar Chart overlay

By adding a GPS Heading Sensor such as the Lowrance Point 1, Simrad GS25, or B&G ZG100 (see related products below),  the >Radar image can be superimposed over the Chart Plotter image. This adds to your situational awareness and saves valuable screen space.
