Ingress Protection (IP) Rating or International Protection Rating, consists of the letters IP followed by two digits or one digit and one letter and an optional letter, as defined in international standard IEC 60529.

The IP Code classifies and rates the degrees of protection provided against the intrusion of solid objects (including body parts like hands and fingers), dust, accidental contact, and water in mechanical casings and with electrical enclosures. The standard aims to provide users more detailed information than vague marketing terms such as waterproof or splashproof. However, no edition of the standard is openly published for unlicensed readers, hence leaving space for varying interpretation.

The code is comprised of 4 digits; IP followed by the numerical value for protection against solid particle ingress, followed by the numerical value for protection against liquid ingress. Where there is no protection rating with regard to one of the criteria, the digit is replaced with the letter X.

Solids - First Digit

First Digit indicates the level of protection that the enclosure provides against access to hazardous parts (e.g. electrical conductors, moving parts) and the ingress of solid foreign objects.

Note: At this website we usually won't refer to the first digit, as only liquids apply in the marine industry.

Liquids - Second Digit

3	Spraying water	Water falling as a spray at any angle up to 60° from the vertical at 10 liters/min at a pressure of 80-100kN/m2 for 5 min shall have no harmful effect
4	Splashing water	Water splashing against the enclosure from any direction at 10 liters/min at a pressure of 80-100kN/m2 for 5 min shall have no harmful effect
5	Water jets	Water projected by a 6.3mm nozzle at a flow rate of 12.5 liters/min at a pressure of 30kN/m2 for 3 minutes from a distance of 3 meters against enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effects
6	Powerful water jets/heavy seas	Water projected in powerful jets against enclosure from any direction at a flow rate of 100 liters/min at a pressure of 100kN/m2 for 3 minutes from a distance of 3 meters shall have no harmful effects
7	Immersion up to 1m	Ingress of water in harmful quantity shall not be possible when the enclosure is immersed in water under defined condition of pressure and time (up to 1m of submersion)
8	Immersion beyond 1m	The equipment is suitable for continuous immersion in water under conditions which shall be specified by the manufacturer. Normally, this will mean that the equipment is hermetically sealed. However, with certain types of equipment, it can mean that water can enter but only in such a manner that produces no harmful effects
